November 26, 2012: Our guest speaker was Dr Debbie Sydow, President of Richard Bland College. The Liberal Arts and Sciences College has 1,500 students, of which 21 Percent are from Chesterfield. Through operational efficiencies, Richard Bland has the lowest tuition of any college in Virginia. Starting in 2008, Richard Bland began to house some students on campus. They now house 250 students. The school has recenting hired a Sports Director to create an inter-collegiate sports program. For more information on Richard Bland, click http://www.rbc.edu/.

November 12, 2012. Our guest speaker was Leonard McAdams a financial advisor for Edward Jones. Leonard has been a member of the Kiwanis Club of Colonial Heights for 33 years. His office is located on Lee Street across the street from our meeting location where he manages the Kiwanis Club of Chester Foundation funds. Leonard provided his annual update on how club funds have been invested and the rate of return from the investments. The club has been fortunate that Leonard and his firm have managed to achieve positive over the few years. October 8, 2012. Ed Montgomery who previously visited our club on January 25, 2010 was again our guest speaker. By trade, Ed has been a handyman and licensed commercial builder. In November 2008, Ed's dentist advised him to see a specialist concerning swelling of his lymph nodes on his neck. Ed went on to discover that he had throat cancer. Ed described his ordeals with having his cancer treated through recent advancements in treating cancer. Ed went under chemo therapy and suffered many side-effects including loss of hair, loss of taste, trouble with salivary glands, trouble swallowing, weight loss, and other sicknesses. Ed showed the brass and silver filters used during radiation therapy where he underwent eight weeks of treatments. During this time, Ed became aware of caringbridge.org where he developed a web site to stay in touch with his family and friends. As many have found with serious illnesses, family and friends may be hesitate to communicate often as not to disturb the patient. Though the use of the CaringBridge web technology, patients have an easier time staying in communication and relaying progress and soliciting support. Since his sickness, Ed has run marathons and most enjoys the 1500. September 17, 2012: The Kiwanis Club of Chester held their annual Installation of Officers Banquet at Howlett's Restaurant. The club welcomed members of the Thomas Dale High School Key and Keyette Clubs, members from Petersburg Kiwanis and special guest Division 18 Lt. Governor Ron Revish.

20: Chester Kiwanis: Social Meeting. In lieu of a meeting, we will have a “PotLuck at the Pavilion”. Meet your fellow Kiwanians, spouses and/orsignificant others for a dinner and games at the pavilion behind the Chester Y(close to the pond). The club will provide a main dish, drinks and plates, etc.Please bring a side dish, salad or dessert and join us for fun, beginning at6:30. Rumor has it there will be ice cream!

July 23, 2012. Thomas Dale High School Key Club President Colin Neil and Vice President Kristen Coker addressed the club to provide updates on the Key Club's service projects for the year. We welcomed several Members from the Kiwanis Club of Hopewell who joined us for an Inter-Club meeting. The club members sang Happy Birthday to Walt Carter.

May 21, 2012. Our guest speaker was Scott Brown who provided an update for the Ft Lee Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC). The US Army Garrison at Ft Lee ocuppies 5,907 acres and has grown from 7.5 million square feet of facilities to 14 million after BRAC. During BRAC, the base has grown from 16 thousand to 44,500 personnel and 113,000 go through Ft Lee each year. BRAC established 56 new buildings, four major renovations, provides 21st Centrury Class Rooms with 400 sustainment courses. BRAC had a budget of $1.2 billiion and came in $100 million under budget. Of the 38 major contracts, 65 percent of them were awarded to Virginia businesses. Our area is lucky to have the Ft Lee facility close and we appreciate the work of Scott Brown and the Staff at Ft Lee. May 14, 2012. Left George "Bubba" Bowles, Senior Engineer Chesterfield Department of Utilities. Center Ron Jaeckle Club Programs Chair. Right Roy Covington, Director, Chesterfiled Department of Utilities. Roy Covington presented an overview of the water and waste management activities for our county. Chesterfield County has won awards for excellence in the quality of our water and waste facilities The Department of Utilities is a self sustaining enterprise and does not use county tax dollars. The department derives its revenues from customer water and sewer bills. With a AAA bond rating among the highest in the country, the department provides a cost competitive service in comparison to surrounding areas. Roy described the reason why Lake Chesdin's water level went so low during the 2010 drought in comparison to the worse 2002 drought and what the county has done to make it more unlikely that will occur in the future. 02: Kiwanis Club of Chester: will celebrate its 40th Anniversary with a dinner at Howlett's Restaurant & Tavern, 3530 Festival Park Plaza, Chester Village Green on Monday, April 2, 2012 at 6:30 p.m. Come hear stories from our Charter Members and celebrate the rich history of Kiwanis' 40 years of community service to Chester. February 27, 2012. Our guest speaker was Larry Belcher. Larry helped to start the Sprirt of Baseball in Portsmouth in 2004 and moved to Dinwiddie in 2009 where is continued activities in the Richmond, VA area. The goal of the organization is to teach children how to play baseball and share the love of Christ with them. The organizationi sponsors one day camps to teach children nine skills of baseball. During the last camp, 70 children will participated and were given tee shirts, baseballs, gloves and a copyof the Christian Althelete New Testament booklet. February 13, 2012. The guest speaker was Marcus Walker. Marcus is community services director for Broadwater Townhomes in Chester. Marcus works to obtain partners and volunteers to help families who need assistance. Largely assisted by the Chester United Methodist Church and Chester Christian Church and more than 15 other partners to provide after school, Spring and Summer programs to help youth with tutoring, atheletics and other activities. The group meets at the Broadwater Clubhouse from 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM Mondays through Thursdays.

January 30, 2012. Our guest speaker was Peter J. McCourt, Mission Vice President for Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Centerwho provided an update on the development of St. Francis and plans for its future. Mr. McCourt provided the club with a history of the Bon Secours organization which began in Paris France in1824. Recognizing that health care and family needs where not being met a group of 12 women came together to form the Sisters of Bon Secours with the mission to care for the sick and dying in their homes. Bon Secours is French for "Good Help”. The movement first came to Baltimore in our Country in 1881. Over the years the movement expanded to a system of healthcare facilities and services. Mr. McCourt noted that St. Francis Medical Center, opening in 2005, is the “baby of the system” and has been recognized not only for its physical appearance but for its health care accomplishments. Mr. Stuhlreyer provided an overview of the programs that have developed at St. Francis since its opening. He also discussed the rational for the development of the facility at Watkins Center, an outpatient facility providing emergency care off Midlothian Turnpike at 288. January 23, 2012. Our guest speaker was Dan Hill. Dan was a past member of the Kiwanis Club of Chester and past-president 1996-1997 prior to retiring and moving to Gwynn's Island with his wife Carla. January 16, 2012. Susan McCammon, executive director of the Shepherd’s Center of Chesterfield was our guest speaker. The Shepherd's Center of Chesterfield is a non-profit, interfaith organization of senior adults who donate their time, talents, professional expertise, automobiles, gasoline, and other resources to help other senior adults remain independant in their own homes.

The oganization was established in August 2001 with the mission to enrich the lives of adults 50 and better by offering volunteer opportunities for community service and lifelong learning and to help them remain active and independent. Participants in the organization realize they are needed and valued and that they can continue to live lives that truly matter throughout their later years. Last year, 56 volunteers drove 582 seniors to their doctor's appointments and grocery stores. In addition, there were 13 volunteers to help seniors with minor home repairs. January 9, 2012. In our first meeting after the New Year, the club was pleased to have officers from the Thomas Dale High School present their activities for the year. Activities include Harrogate Adventure Night, the Bellwood Fast Program to assist underprivileged families with dinners, Chesterfest, veteran bag collections, canned food drive, YMCA winter and fall festivals and swim meets, and tutoring. In addition, the officers of the Bryant Statton College Circle K Club participated in their induction of officers’ ceremony. Two of the Circle K club officers are also $500 Kiwanis Club of Chester scholarship winners. Also, the several members from the Colonial Heights Kiwanis Club met for an inter-club meeting. The Colonial Heights Club will be having their annual fundraising Golf Tournament on May 10 which will be held at the Lake Chesdin Golf Club.
