The guest speaker was Pat Robel, a mastergardner and employe...e of the Chesterfield Historical Society. She talked about historical trees in Chesterfield County. Pat has identified at least 26 trees in Chesterfield that may be called historic. She has traveled to these trees and has measured them. The Chesterfield Courthouse area contains five of these grand specimens. The Nunnally White Oak (just outside the county agents office), the large Sycamore (near Rt 10 in front of the old courthouse), the large Osage Orange (just to the east of Magnolia Grange), and a large Southern Red Oak (near the School Board Building) are still standing and in good health. The Nunnally Oak was planted by a county official, (Nunnally) just after the 1817 courthouse was built. A ceremony was documented at the time which provides the provenance. Several other trees were located on the land now occupied by Martins grocery store when the Castlewood House stood at that corner several years ago. Chester also contains five trees. These are located at Harrogate & Old Hundred Road (the Sugar Maple and the Village Red Oak), at the Chester Baptist Church (a Sycamore and a Willow Oak), and Ecoff Road next to the liner park, (Southern Red Oak). Several of the Kiwanians recalled hearing interesting stories about these old trees which they relayed to the club. One was, an individual who owned a taxi service in Chester, used one of the trees as brakes for his car since the car brakes were in bad shape. A full list of old trees in the area can be obtained from Pat at RobelP@chesterfield.gov. Probably the definitive book about historic trees in Virginia is Remarkable Trees of Virginia.

14: Chester Kiwanis: Meeting, Program:
Emil Avram, Director, Business Development at Dominion Resources spoke to us Monday evening. He is currently responsible for the acquisition and development of new power generation assets, with a focus on renewable energy facilities, including wind, biomass and solar facilities in Virginia and other states. He outlined the efforts that Dominion is making to comply with the state requirment that the company derive a percentage of its power from nontraditional sources. These include wind, solar, wave, combo generation, biomass (waste wood), and of course nuclear. Dominion has power generating facilities in several states from Indiana to New York and south to North Carolina. The company is cooperating with the federal government to develop off shore wind farms, although at present the cost per kw is very high, with the development of better technology the cost is probably going to come down. Some interesting facts were that solar generation cost is dropping very quickly from a level of $0.40 per kw to approximately $0.20 per kw. now and is continuing its decline. Emil said that if the decline in cost continues, it will be on par with coal and other traditional fuels with in several years. For those in attendenance the talk was informative and very well received.
